Fourteen albums in and fifteen years deep, Rollerball, bring their outward bound song structures laced with dark jazz and noise funk back to the US via Portland label, North Pole Records. A living / breathing recording ethic, five European tours, constant West Coast presence, and underground cred that can’t be beat, Rollerball, is an established institution influencing what bands sound like in Portland, Oregon and throughout the world. Two Feathers is Rollerball’s first domestic release since 2005’s Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause. The past two albums, Rollerball and Ahura were available only on avant super label, Wallace Records based in Italy, a country that has long championed Rollerball.
The rhythm section, Gilles on drums and Monte Trent Allen on bass, drop extended deep grooves and lock-step rhythm changes, anchoring Two Feathers‘ sound with wizened authority and practiced ability. Amidst layers of intriguing percussion, electronic murk, and the damp acoustic hollowness of Amanda Mason Wiles’ saxophone poetry, Mae Starr weaves intricate and inventive keyboard magic. Her fingers swallowed by rings that stream up and pounce down the keyboard, evoking powerful vocalists like PJ Harvey or June Tyson, and casting spells over a rapt audience.
Hard to describe and impossible to pin down, Rollerball, has been praised throughout their storied career by The Wire, Pitchfork, Brainwashed, Blow Up, Fake Jazz, The Oregonian, Terrascope, Mercury, Stranger, etc., and played on radio stations around the world. They have released music on Roadcone, Cochon, Silber, Jalopy Grotto, Nillacat, Pacific Wonderland, and Felina y magia in the States and Bar la muerte, Wallace, and Hysm in Italy. Rollerball has been compared to Sun Ra, New Order, Cereberus Shoal, JOMF, Califone, and Can.
Two Feathers is packaged as an LP with CD/DVD included or as a gatefold CD/DVD card wallet. The DVD includes music videos from the nineties and into the new millenium, as well as, The Three Brunos, a film by Starbage Hands featuring tour footage and performances by Rollerball, OVO, and Ronin in Italy and Slovenia in 2005. Long time saxophone collaborator, Jacopo Andreini (L’enfants Rouge, Squarcicatrici), performs throughout the DVD. The CD also features Scott Rosenberg (Pink Mountain) on saxophone.

"Ahura finds the band sounding its most distilled, focused, and accessible. " ~ Willamette Week Ahura is Rollerball's third cd on Wallace and it is the first album since 1997's "Garlic" to not have Shane de Leon on it. A driving song based album with a few spaced out jammers.

A cdr released on a small Italian label. This album shows Rollerball experimenting heavily with sound and song form. Experimental collages with a few songs, including the upbeat latin beat/rap "Connie's Meth Lab". Stoned out and blissful. Limited release but we have a few around the shop.

"All music that transcends time & culture while at the same time treading over new sonic territories is well worth a listen in my book, & it’s hard to think of anyone doing just that more than Rollerball." ~ Mats Gustafson, The Broken Face

"Drama queens with serious avant-garde credentials, Rollerball shapeshift with subtle grandiosity among krout rock, jazz, drone, gypsy, & afrobeat without the taint of dilettantism. Their great recent Catholic Paws/Catholic Pause adds yet another layer of mysterious beauty to the Portland ensemble's stunning repertoir. " ~ Dave Segal, The Stranger

"I once said that Portland’s Rollerball is all about organics, texture and surprisingly sonic gestures. Add to all this the occasional drone, samples, funky beats and deep audio experimentation and you know we’re in for an adventurous jazz listen. This is jazz for the ones who enjoy starting at the sky, exploring the space from a comfortable distance. That’s still very much the case on Behind the Barber (their tenth album and second for Silber), which somehow manages to bind together the chilly jazz and fragile folk/chamber explorations of Trail of the Butter Yeti (Road Cone) with the more poppy and cabaret theatric side of their Silber debut. The combination of the band’s most recent characteristics is simply superb and one can’t help but to be stunned by how something so genuinely experimental and genre-bending also can be so spacious and packed with grooves. The thing I enjoy the most is possibly when the band takes a right down free jazz street. But don’t let this fool you to believe that you’re in for some extreme manifestations along the lines of Ayler or Brötzmann, no this is fluid free-jazz spaciousness that is much more about textures and fragmentized world views than walls of noise. Not that we don’t get the occasional wailing horn but they’re just there to color the ornamental whole with yet another beautiful nuance. This criminally overlooked combo deserves a seat right next to Jackie-O Motherfucker on the bus to the psych/free jazz heavens." ~ Mats Gustafson, The Broken Face

"This album is staggering in its creativity, even though it's probably the most pop-focused of Rollerball's releases. They bring the funk influence, which has always been lurking, closer to the fore quite tastefully, with propulsive drums and full-bodied bass inspiring movement, but the highlight of their music is definitely the super-catchy lyrics and melodies. Stabbing, anthemic horn leads and smoky piano lines accompany their vaguely dadaist cabaret vocals, singing seemingly lighthearted verses about clarinet samples and our forefathers wearing drag, but the sense of tension that their dramatic presentation inspires is remarkable. Rollerball's little details of organic experimentation and everything-including-the-kitchen-sink noisemaking are still present in some form, but they're more tightly woven into the songs themselves, such that the album is full of interesting sounds throughout, but free from gratuitously tacked on elements. Still, this is a far cry from the extended free-noise of their earlier works. Tracks like "66 Deadhead Spies" and "Starling" play up the loungey aspects—shared male/female vocals and slick piano instrumentation; while a steady bassline anchors "Mike's Hind," the sole instrumental piece, as various sound effects and improvised phrases float through the mix. "Spine Delay" seems to be a shout out to all dudes in the audience with its deranged, at times hyper-falsetto, singing, until the horror-movie organ emerges and the band settles on a mellow groove. The album ends with a suitably incomprehensible spoken word piece about nature. Rollerball are an entertaining and interesting band, and it's great to hear further development of their refreshingly unique pop music." ~ Steve Smith, Brainwashed.com

- Live KBOO

CDr 2003 | Nillacat22
12 Tracks | 52 minutes
OUT OF PRINT

Recorded live at KBOO in Portland, OR. There is a break in the middle of the program and the DJ, Jennifer Robin, announces that the United States of America has gone to war in Iraq. She says that there are protestors downtown who need water. We all are dumbfounded and sad. On their North Pole Records debut, "Two Feathers" DVD, there is a film called "March" and you can hear her announcement in full while, Bunny and Mini cruise the anti-war protest exactly one year later.

Rollerball
- My First Cowboy

CD Split 2002 | Barlamuerte019
17 Tracks | 47 minutes

A totally freaked out split with tracks by OVO and Rollerball all mixed up and members of both bands working on some tracks with each other. Menacing, blasphemous, and just plain strange. These two bands are still working and touring together. A musical family of twisted folks.

Rollerball
-Long Walk for Ice Cream

Digipak CD 2002 | Cochon08
13 Tracks | 54 minutes

This is a collection of unreleased songs, the 7" "Travels with Steam" (cochon 003) and the "Zapatos" 10" (cochon 002). It is mostly an upbeat poppy/funk rollerball style album. We still play it alot around here. An interesting era collected on this one. Some of the songs features members of the Art of Flying.

Rollerball
-Porky Puppet

Folio CD 2001 | Wallace 023
18 Tracks | 70 minutes

Another collection of vinyl oddities, unreleased cuts, compilation appearances, and live recordings. The first cd released by Rollerball's Italian label, Wallace, and boy is it heady. Includes the vinyl album "We owned Lions" in it's entirety. Getting rather hard to get but luckily we still have a few.

Rollerball
-Trail of the Butter Yeti

Folio CD 2001 | Roadcone030
11 Tracks | 46 minutes

Considered by some fans to be the ultimate jump off point of the Rollerball sound. They started heading towards free jazz while still holding onto the early pop/goth which was found on "Garlic" and applying the spaciousness and experimentalism of "We Owned Lions". This album has it all including the roots of their collaborations with Bill Horist and the debut of Amanda Mason Wiles wicked sax. Totally spell binding and gorgeous.

Rollerball
-Bathing Music

Folio CD 2000 | Roadcone027
9 Tracks | 42 minutes

This is Rollerball's first release on the legendary Road Cone Records. A moody, brooding sigh of loneliness and yearning. Softer and darker than the next album, "Trail of the Butter Yeti". Play it on a rainy day.

The first Rollerball album on house label Nillacat. Possibly a sketch of Long Walk for Ice Cream and Monte (Mini) working on his compiuter in a closet somewhere on Woodstock in Portland. Hand painted covers by Mae Starr.

-Zapatos

10" 2000 | Cochon02

This 10" was recorded at the barn in New Mexico by Dave Costanza from the Art of Flying. A huge spacious sound and it contains the song Jhoblins which is one of my all time favorite songs by Rollerball. Later to be made famous by Jacopo Andreini. There are a few copies rolling around the North Pole but don't hesitate or they will be gone.

4 songs and we have only three copies left and some of those don't have covers. But if you do buy it and their isn't a cover, we'll make you a special one. Hey there's some guitar on this one!

Rollerball
-Einaugige Kirsche

CD 1999 | Felina y Magia 01
3 Tracks | 35 minutes

Einaugige Kirsche translates to one eyed cherry. A nod to their drunken friend, Cherry Sprout (RIP) (who later appears on the cover of Real Hair, and even later has a Portland produce market named after him). This 3 track cd is a clanging noisy ride with funk underpinnings and minimal vocals. A real rough ride that is thoroughly enjoyable. Comes with a magical spell to bring down the powerful.

Rollerball
- Rollerball featuring Dang Head / Six Foot Sloth

split 7" | Jalopy Grotto008
1 Rollerball track | 2 Six Foot Sloth tracks
OUT OF PRINT

A split 7" with Six Foot Sloth (a band consisting of Amanda, Larry, Gilles, and led by the Jed from The Pink Widower). Rollerball was recorded and ably assisted by Dang Head in Colorado and features some of his many tricks including clarinet and engineering. Six foot Sloth on these two recordings featured Cherry Sprout.

Rollerball
-We Owned Lions

Vinyl LP 1998 | Pacific Wonderland 01
7 Tracks | 38 minutes
Item is Postage Paid

This is a clear vinyl only LP with only 300 copies made. We have two copies left. A collection of instrumentals, experimental sound collages, remixes, spoken word, and general weirdness. It was later collected on the cd, Porky Puppet. Released by Will Capel (RIP), an early believer of Rollerball, and he asked Rollerball if he could put it out at a really cool William Hooker / Lee Renaldo show at the Satyricon. Of course, they said yes, and now you can own it.

Rollerball
-Rollerball / Creepy Old Trucks

2 Rollerball Tracks | 2 Creepy old Trucks Tracks
OUT OF PRINT

A Split 7" with a Creepy Old Trucks. Ass prints by Scott Arbogast ( Rainstick Cowbell )and letterpress by Starbage Hands as well as stamping by Mae Starr. Late nineties Portland underground art. Freaking brilliant. Rollerball tilts towards Sonic Youth on here.

Rollerball
-Schizherue

1 sided Vinyl EP 1997 | Jalopy Grotto 07
4 Tracks | 18 minutes
Item is Postage Paid

This is a clear blue 1 sided vinyl only EP with only 300 copies made. Recorded live at KBOO by Jay Bozich. Super sweet letterpressed cover by Starbage Hands of Nillacat drinking milk. This is Shane de Leon's debut in the band and is a swirling mix of gothic tinged madness. North Pole has one straggly copy left and it doesn't have a cover, but I'd snatch it up anyway.

Rollerball
-Garlic

CD 2007 | Resistor 02
10 Tracks | 48 minutes
Item is Postage Paid

The debut album by the Rollerball core of Monte Trent Allen, Mae Starr, and Gilles. Dark pop with driving bass and jazzy drums. Probably the most accessible album by the group in terms of radio friendly pop. Artwork by S. de Leon and Matt Grimes. Bitchin'!

Rollerball
-Rollerball / Spurge

7" split | Resistor 01
1 Rollerball Track | 1 Spurge Track
OUT OF PRINT

A Split 7" with a host of Montanans. Spurge is an early band with the Jed from The Pink Widowerin it and he made the cover, including some of the paper which is debossed. The Rollerball song is called Snappy Ken and is the last we hear from Herman, who moves on to Sunset Valley.

Rollerball
- Apples / Galaxy

7" | slo mo 01
2 Tracks
OUT OF PRINT

This is the first vinyl release for Rollerball and is the original line up of Mae Starr, Monte Trent Allen, Gilles, and Herman Jolly. A mid nineties pixie pop with raging hooks. This is where I fell in love with them. You can hear the foreshadowing of what came later stressing out in the back. Matt Grimes did the cool artwork.
